Divide the numerator (top number) by the denominator (bottom number). For example, to convert 3/4, divide 3 ÷ 4 = 0.75. You can use our custom converter above for any fraction.
A terminating decimal ends after a finite number of digits. Fractions whose denominators only have prime factors of 2 and/or 5 (after simplification) will always produce terminating decimals. Examples: 1/2 = 0.5, 1/4 = 0.25, 1/8 = 0.125, 1/5 = 0.2.
A repeating decimal has a digit or group of digits that repeats infinitely. This happens when the denominator (after simplification) has prime factors other than 2 or 5. For example, 1/3 = 0.333333... and 1/7 = 0.142857142857.... In our chart, repeating decimals are marked with "..." at the end.
Count the decimal places, use that power of 10 as the denominator, then simplify. For example: 0.75 has 2 decimal places → 75/100 → simplify by dividing both by 25 → 3/4. For repeating decimals, the process is more complex and involves algebraic methods.
The most common conversions include halves (1/2 = 0.5), thirds (1/3 ≈ 0.333, 2/3 ≈ 0.667), quarters (1/4 = 0.25, 3/4 = 0.75), fifths (1/5 = 0.2), eighths (1/8 = 0.125, 3/8 = 0.375, 5/8 = 0.625, 7/8 = 0.875), and tenths (1/10 = 0.1). These are widely used in cooking, woodworking, and everyday math.
Our comprehensive chart includes both simplified and unsimplified fractions because you may encounter measurements in various denominations. For example, a ruler marked in 16ths might show 8/16, which equals 1/2. Having all variations helps with quick reference in practical situations.
All decimal values are calculated to 6 decimal places for precision. For terminating decimals, we display the exact value without trailing zeros. For repeating decimals, we show 6 decimal places followed by "..." to indicate the pattern continues infinitely. This level of precision is sufficient for most practical applications including engineering, cooking, and academic work.
