Frequently Asked Questions

What is a bead loom pattern?

A bead loom pattern is a grid-based design chart where each square (or cell) represents one bead on the loom. Columns correspond to warp threads, and rows correspond to weft passes. Designers use these patterns to plan bead colors and arrangements before stringing, ensuring consistent results for bracelets, bands, straps, and decorative woven beadwork.

How many beads do I need for my design?

To calculate total beads needed, multiply your pattern's columns by rows (e.g., 20 columns × 15 rows = 300 beads). Our tool automatically counts beads per color in the stats panel on the right. For Delica beads (size 11/0), approximately 18–20 beads fit per inch; for standard seed beads (size 11/0), about 16–18 beads per inch. Always purchase 10–15% extra to account for sorting and breakage.

What bead brands work best for loom weaving?

Miyuki Delica beads (11/0) are the gold standard for loom work due to their uniform cylindrical shape and large holes. Toho Treasure and Toho Aiko are excellent alternatives with precise sizing. Czech Preciosa seed beads are more affordable but have slight size variation. For beginners, we recommend Miyuki Delica 11/0 for the most predictable results.

How do I transfer my pattern to a physical loom?

Start by warping your loom with one more warp thread than the number of columns in your pattern (e.g., 21 warps for a 20-column pattern). Each row of the pattern corresponds to one weft pass. Read the pattern from top to bottom or bottom to top—whichever matches your loom setup. Use a beading needle to pick up beads in the exact color sequence shown in each row, then pass the weft thread through all beads above the warp threads.

Can I save and share my bead loom patterns?

Yes! Click the PNG button to download your pattern as a high-resolution image—perfect for sharing on Pinterest, Instagram, or with fellow beaders. Use the JSON export to save your pattern data, which you can reload later using the Import button. JSON files store all color and grid data, allowing you to resume designing anytime without losing progress.

What size should my bead loom pattern be?

For bracelets, common pattern sizes range from 9–19 columns wide (producing 0.5–1.2 inch width with size 11/0 beads) and 40–80 rows long (for a standard 6–8 inch bracelet). For wider cuffs, 20–35 columns works well. For keychains or small accessories, 7–12 columns is typical. Our tool supports grids from 3×3 up to 80×60, covering everything from tiny motifs to large tapestry-style designs.
