A Quilt Pattern Previewer is an online tool that lets you visualize fabric layouts before cutting any material. You can experiment with different color combinations, grid sizes, and classic quilt block patterns like Nine Patch or Irish Chain. This helps quilters plan their projects, estimate fabric quantities, and avoid costly mistakes—all without needing specialized software.

Start with a focal color and build around it using the color wheel. Complementary colors (opposite on the wheel) create bold contrast, while analogous colors (next to each other) create harmony. Our tool offers preset palettes like "Warm Country" and "Ocean" to inspire you. You can also use the eyedropper tool to sample colors from your grid and refine your palette as you design.

Beginners often start with the Nine Patch (a 3×3 grid with alternating colors), the Checkerboard pattern, or simple Stripes. The Irish Chain pattern is another classic that looks complex but follows a simple repeating diagonal logic. Our template buttons let you instantly apply these patterns to any grid size, so you can see how they look before sewing.

Use the Color Counts panel on the left to see how many cells use each color. Multiply the cell count by your planned block size (e.g., 4" × 4") to get the total area per color, then add 15-20% for seam allowances and waste. For example, if blue appears in 20 cells at 4" each, that's 320 sq. inches of blue fabric needed. Always round up and buy extra for safety.

The exported image includes the current grid lines and texture settings, giving you a clean preview of your design.

Symmetry mode automatically mirrors your color placements across the grid. Horizontal symmetry mirrors top-to-bottom, vertical mirrors left-to-right, and four-way symmetry mirrors in all four quadrants simultaneously. This is incredibly useful for designing mandala-style quilts, medallion patterns, or any design where balanced repetition is desired. It saves time and ensures perfect symmetry.

Different fabric weaves catch light differently—cotton has a fine, even texture; linen shows a subtle horizontal grain; and twill creates a diagonal rib. Our texture overlay feature simulates these effects so you can preview how your pattern might look in different materials. While the color is the dominant factor, texture adds depth and realism to your preview, especially for larger blocks.
