Frequently Asked Questions
What is a Perler bead pattern?
A Perler bead pattern is a pixelated template that shows you exactly where to place each colored bead on a pegboard. Think of it like a cross-stitch chart β€” each square represents one bead. Our tool converts your photo into this bead-by-bead layout automatically.
How do I turn a photo into a Perler bead pattern?
Upload your photo, choose how many beads wide you want the design (we recommend 30–50 for portraits), select "Match Perler Bead Colors" mode, and the tool automatically maps each pixel to the closest real bead color. Download the result and start beading!
What grid size should I use?
For small keychains, use 15–25 beads wide. For wall art or larger projects, go with 40–60 beads. Portraits look best at 30–50 beads wide. Keep in mind: more beads = more detail, but also more time and materials needed. A 40Γ—50 pattern uses 2,000 beads!
Does this work with Hama or other bead brands?
Absolutely! The color palette we use covers the most common shades found across Perler, Hama, Artkal, and Nabbi brands. While exact color names may differ between manufacturers, the RGB matching ensures your pattern will look great with any brand's beads.
What kind of photo gives the best results?
Use well-lit photos with good contrast and a clear subject. Avoid busy backgrounds β€” a plain or simple background helps the subject stand out. Headshots and portraits with even lighting work exceptionally well. The tool also applies smart dithering to preserve details even with limited colors.
How accurate is the color matching?
We use a curated palette of 40+ authentic bead colors with precise RGB values. When you select "Match Perler Bead Colors," the tool finds the closest real bead color for every pixel using Euclidean distance in RGB space, enhanced with Floyd-Steinberg dithering to preserve gradients and textures.
Can I print the pattern directly?
Yes! Download the PNG with grid lines enabled, then print it. The grid lines and bead circles make it easy to follow row by row. For large patterns, you may want to print across multiple pages or use the digital version on a tablet next to your workspace.
How many beads will I need?
The tool calculates this automatically! Once you upload an image, the stats panel shows the total bead count and a breakdown by color. This helps you purchase exactly what you need. A typical 30Γ—30 pattern uses around 900 beads spread across 15–25 colors.
