Note: 1 cubic yard = 27 cubic feet. Bagged mulch typically comes in 2 ft³ bags, so ~13.5 bags = 1 cubic yard.
Measure the length and width of your garden bed in feet (for rectangular areas) or the diameter (for circular areas). Multiply the area by your desired mulch depth in feet (inches ÷ 12). This gives you cubic feet. Divide by 27 to convert to cubic yards — the standard unit for bulk mulch orders. Our calculator above does all of this instantly.
Formula (Rectangle): Length(ft) × Width(ft) × Depth(in) ÷ 12 = Cubic Feet
1 cubic yard = 27 cubic feet. Bagged mulch is usually sold in cubic feet (commonly 2 ft³ per bag), while bulk mulch from landscape suppliers is sold by the cubic yard. For large projects, buying in cubic yards is typically much more economical. Use the "Cubic Yards" result above to place bulk orders.
Most bagged mulch contains 2 cubic feet per bag. Since 1 cubic yard = 27 cubic feet, you need approximately 13.5 bags (round up to 14) to equal one cubic yard. Some premium brands sell 1.5 ft³ or 3 ft³ bags — always check the label. For projects over 5 cubic yards, bulk delivery is usually cheaper than buying individual bags.
Absolutely! The math is identical — volume is volume. Simply input your area dimensions and desired depth (in inches), and the calculator works for topsoil, gravel, sand, compost, wood chips, rubber mulch, pine straw, or any bulk landscaping material. The bag count estimate assumes 2 ft³ bags, so adjust accordingly for different bag sizes.
Break the area into smaller rectangles, squares, and circles. Calculate each section separately using our calculator, then add the cubic yard totals together. For curved beds, approximate with a rectangle that roughly matches the average width. It's always wise to order 5–10% extra to account for irregularities, settling, and spillage.
