How are US federal holidays handled in this calculator?
Our calculator recognizes all 11 official US federal holidays. If a holiday falls on a Saturday, it's observed on the preceding Friday; if it falls on a Sunday, it's observed on the following Monday. You can toggle federal holiday exclusion on or off depending on your needs.
What is the "Observed" holiday rule?
In the United States, when a federal holiday lands on a Saturday, the observed holiday is moved to Friday. When it lands on a Sunday, it moves to Monday. This ensures federal employees still get a weekday off. Our calculator automatically applies these observed rules to all fixed-date federal holidays like New Year's Day (Jan 1), Independence Day (Jul 4), Veterans Day (Nov 11), and Christmas (Dec 25).
Can I add my own custom holidays or company-specific days off?
Yes! Use the "Custom Holidays" section to add any date you'd like to exclude from business day calculations. This is perfect for company holidays, regional observances, personal leave days, or any other non-standard days off. Simply click "Add," pick a date, and it will be excluded from the count.
How does the calculator handle weekends?
Saturdays and Sundays are automatically excluded from business day counts. The calculator uses the standard Monday-through-Friday work week. All weekend days that fall between your start date and the calculated end date are counted and displayed in the results breakdown.
What if my start date is a weekend or a holiday?
The calculator will show a warning if your start date falls on a weekend or a recognized holiday, but it will still compute correctly — counting business days starting from the day after your start date. For example, if you start on a Saturday and add 1 business day, the result will be the following Monday (assuming no holiday).
Why would I use negative business days?
Negative business days let you calculate backwards — for example, finding what date is 10 business days before a deadline. This is useful for project planning, determining when to start a task to meet a due date, or calculating past periods like "15 business days ago" for reporting purposes.
Are floating holidays like Thanksgiving calculated correctly each year?
Yes! Floating holidays are dynamically calculated for each relevant year: Martin Luther King Jr. Day (3rd Monday of January), Presidents' Day (3rd Monday of February), Memorial Day (last Monday of May), Labor Day (1st Monday of September), Columbus Day (2nd Monday of October), and Thanksgiving (4th Thursday of November). The calculator accurately determines these dates for any year in your date range.
