Grout coverage depends on tile dimensions, joint width, and tile thickness. The formula is: Grout per m² = (Tile Length + Tile Width) × Joint Width × Tile Thickness / (Tile Length × Tile Width). This gives the volume per square meter. Multiply by total area and grout density (typically 1.6 kg/L) to get the weight needed. Our calculator handles all unit conversions automatically.

Sanded grout contains fine sand for strength and is used for joints wider than 3mm (1/8″). It resists cracking and is ideal for floors and large-format tiles. Unsanded grout is smoother, used for joints 3mm or narrower, and is best for wall tiles, mosaics, and polished surfaces where sand might scratch. Epoxy grout is waterproof and stain-resistant — perfect for bathrooms, kitchens, and pools.

As a general rule: Mosaic tiles use 1–2mm spacers; Wall tiles use 2–3mm; Floor tiles use 3–5mm; Large-format tiles (over 600mm/24″) use 4–6mm. Natural stone often requires wider joints (up to 6mm). Always check the manufacturer's recommendation, and remember that rectified tiles can use narrower joints.

We recommend a 5–10% waste factor for most projects. For complex layouts with lots of cuts, or if you're a DIYer, bump it to 10–15%. Grout is inexpensive compared to running out mid-project. It's always safer to buy one extra bag — unopened bags can usually be returned.

Yes! Select "Epoxy Grout" from the grout type dropdown. Epoxy grout has a higher density (~1.8 kg/L vs 1.6 kg/L for cement grout), so you'll need slightly more weight for the same volume. Epoxy grout coverage is often listed by the manufacturer — use our volume result (in liters) and check your specific product's coverage chart for the most accurate estimate.

Grout fills the entire depth of the joint between tiles. Thicker tiles mean deeper joints, which require more grout to fill. For example, a 12mm-thick floor tile needs about 20% more grout than an 8mm-thick wall tile of the same size. Always measure your actual tile thickness — it's a key factor many calculators overlook.

It varies significantly. For standard 300×300mm tiles with 3mm joints, a 5kg bag covers approximately 10–12 m². For smaller tiles or wider joints, coverage drops. For 600×600mm tiles with 3mm joints, the same bag may cover 20–25 m². Use our calculator with your specific tile dimensions for an accurate estimate.

Rectified tiles are precisely cut to exact dimensions with perfectly square edges. They can be installed with narrower joints (as tight as 1.5–2mm), which means less grout is needed. However, the subfloor must be perfectly level, and the installer must be experienced. Non-rectified tiles have slight size variations and typically need wider joints (3mm+) to compensate.
