Frequently Asked Questions

The calculation starts with the Resting Energy Requirement (RER): 70 × (body weight in kg)0.75. Then we apply a life stage & activity multiplier to get the Maintenance Energy Requirement (MER). This multiplier accounts for age, spay/neuter status and daily activity.

After spaying/neutering, a dog’s metabolism often slows down, reducing daily energy requirements by about 20–30%. This calculator adjusts the multiplier downward for altered dogs to prevent unwanted weight gain.

The default result is for maintaining current weight. For weight loss, feed slightly less (80–90% of MER) or choose a lower activity level. For weight gain, feed 110–120% of MER. Always transition slowly and consult your veterinarian.

Puppies are growing rapidly and have high metabolic demands. Our factors (2.5× for under 4 months, 2.0× for 4–12 months) reflect the extra energy needed for development. Ensure you feed a puppy-formulated diet.

Check the label on your dog food package. It is usually listed as “kcal per cup” or “kcal per 100 g”. If it’s not shown, visit the manufacturer’s website or contact them directly.
