Get personalized daily calorie targets for your feline friend.Managing your cat's weight is crucial for preventing diabetes, joint issues, and ensuring a long, healthy life. Whether you have a playful kitten or a serene senior cat, understanding daily energy needs is the first step to optimal health.
Our tool uses a two-step veterinary standard formula. First, we determine the Resting Energy Requirement (RER), which is the calories needed for a resting body to function. Then, we adjust for life stage, activity, and goals to find the Maintenance Energy Requirement (MER).
We use a safe reduction factor (0.8x) to prevent hepatic lipidosis (fatty liver disease).
We increase intake by 1.6x to help underweight cats safely build body mass.
Using Body Condition Score prevents feeding an obese cat based on its current weight.
What is RER and MER in cats?
RER (Resting Energy Requirement) is the baseline calories a cat needs for vital organ function at rest. MER (Maintenance Energy Requirement) is the RER multiplied by a factor accounting for activity, life stage, and health status. This is the actual calories your cat needs daily.
How many calories should my cat eat to lose weight?
Safe feline weight loss requires feeding about 80% of the MER calculated for their *ideal* weight, not their current weight. Our calculator automatically adjusts this to prevent dangerous rapid weight loss.
How to help a cat gain weight healthily?
To help a cat gain weight, you need a calorie surplus. We recommend feeding 1.6x the RER for steady, healthy weight gain. Pair this with high-protein, high-fat kitten food or veterinary recovery diets for the best results.
What is the Body Condition Score (BCS)?
The BCS is a visual and palpable assessment of a cat's body fat. It typically uses a 1-9 scale. A score of 4-5 is ideal. Using BCS alongside weight helps determine if your cat is truly overweight or just a large breed.
Is this calculator safe for kittens?
Yes, we include a "Kitten" option which uses a higher multiplier to support their rapid growth and boundless energy. Kittens generally require significantly more calories per pound of body weight than adult cats.
