📖 Frequently Asked Questions
What is a Finger Drum Pad?
A finger drum pad is a virtual percussion instrument that lets you trigger drum sounds using your computer keyboard or touch screen. It emulates hardware like the AKAI MPC or Ableton Push, giving you instant access to kick, snare, hi-hat, clap, tom, and various percussion sounds right from your browser—no downloads required.
How do I play the drum sounds?
Each of the 16 pads is mapped to a keyboard key. The top row uses keys 7 8 9 0, second row U I O P, third row J K L ;, and bottom row M , . /. You can also click or tap the pads directly with your mouse or finger on touchscreen devices. Multiple pads can be triggered simultaneously for chords and layered rhythms.
Can I record my drum performance?
Yes! Click the red Record button (or press the R key) to start capturing your performance. Hit the Stop button (or Space key) to end recording. Then press Play to hear your looped playback. You can clear the recording anytime with the trash button. The tool captures timing, pad selection, and velocity for accurate playback.
What drum kits are available?
There are four preset kits to choose from: Standard Kit (versatile acoustic-style drums), Hip Hop 808 (deep booming kicks and crisp snares), Electronic (synthesized, glitchy, and modern EDM sounds), and Latin Percussion (congas, claves, shakers, and cowbells). Switch between them using the preset buttons above the pads.
Does the metronome help with timing?
Absolutely. The built-in metronome can be toggled on/off with the metronome button. You can adjust the BPM (beats per minute) from 40 to 200 using the BPM slider. The beat indicator dots show the current beat position—the first beat lights up brightly as the downbeat, helping you stay locked into the groove while recording.
Does this work on mobile devices?
Yes! The finger drum pad is fully responsive and optimized for touch screens. On smartphones and tablets, simply tap the pads with your fingers to play. The 4×4 grid adjusts to fit your screen while maintaining comfortable tap targets. It works on iOS Safari, Android Chrome, and all modern mobile browsers.
Do I need to install anything?
No installation required. This tool runs entirely in your web browser using the Web Audio API to synthesize drum sounds in real-time. There are no audio files to download and no plugins needed—just open the page and start playing. It works offline once loaded, making it perfect for quick practice sessions.
What keyboard shortcuts are available?
Beyond the 16 drum pad keys, there are convenient shortcuts: R to start/stop recording, Space to stop playback, P to play back your recording, and C to clear the recording. The number keys 1-4 switch between the four preset kits. These shortcuts let you control the tool without taking your hands off the keyboard.
How are the drum sounds generated?
All drum sounds are synthesized in real-time using the Web Audio API. Kick drums use frequency-swept sine waves for deep low-end punch; snares combine tonal oscillators with filtered noise for crisp attack; hi-hats use high-pass filtered noise bursts; and cymbals use longer noise decays. This synthesis approach means zero latency and no sample loading time, while still producing rich, dynamic sounds.
