Frequently Asked Questions

How do I calculate weight plates for a barbell?

Subtract the barbell's weight from your target total. Divide the result by 2 — that's how much weight you need per side. Then use the largest plates available to build that weight. Our calculator does this automatically: just enter your target weight, and it shows exactly which plates to load on each side.

What is the standard barbell weight?

A standard Olympic barbell weighs 45 lbs (20 kg). Women's Olympic barbells are lighter at 35 lbs (15 kg) and have a slightly thinner shaft. EZ curl bars typically weigh 20–25 lbs, trap/hex bars weigh 45–65 lbs, and specialty bars vary. Always check your specific bar — especially in home gyms.

What are the standard weight plate sizes?

In pounds: 45, 35, 25, 10, 5, and 2.5 lbs. Some gyms also stock 100 lb and 55 lb plates. In kilograms: 25, 20, 15, 10, 5, 2.5, and 1.25 kg. Competition plates follow strict color codes: red (25 kg/55 lbs), blue (20 kg/45 lbs), yellow (15 kg/35 lbs), and green (10 kg/25 lbs).

Why use a plate calculator instead of mental math?

As weights get heavier or plate inventory gets limited, mental math becomes error-prone. A calculator eliminates guesswork, ensures symmetrical loading (critical for safety), and finds the optimal plate combination using the fewest plates. It's especially useful when your gym has limited or mixed plate types.

What if my gym doesn't have certain plate sizes?

Our tool lets you customize your plate inventory — simply adjust the quantity for each plate type to match what's available at your gym. The calculator will find the best combination using only the plates you actually have. This is a key advantage over basic calculators that assume unlimited plates.

How do I load plates symmetrically on a barbell?

Always load identical plates on both sides of the barbell. Start with the heaviest plates closest to the center (the bar's collars), and work outward with progressively lighter plates. Secure everything with barbell collars/clips. Our visual display shows the correct loading order — largest plates innermost.

Can I use this calculator for kilograms (kg)?

Yes! Toggle the unit switch to KG mode. The calculator automatically adjusts barbell weights, plate options, and presets to standard metric values. It supports 25 kg, 20 kg, 15 kg, 10 kg, 5 kg, 2.5 kg, and 1.25 kg plates — the full IPF competition range plus common gym plates.

What's the difference between Olympic plates and standard plates?

Olympic plates have a 2-inch (50mm) center hole and fit Olympic barbells. Standard plates have a 1-inch (25mm) hole. Olympic plates are what you'll find in most commercial gyms and are used in competition. Our calculator assumes Olympic-style plates and barbells, which is the modern standard.
