Reptile shedding (ecdysis) typically progresses through 5 stages: Pre-Shed (skin appears dull, behavior changes), Blue Phase (eyes become cloudy/milky, especially in snakes), Clearing Phase (eyes clear up, shedding imminent within 24-72 hours), Active Shedding (the reptile rubs against surfaces to peel off old skin), and Complete (shed is finished, inspect for retained shed). Duration varies by species, age, and environmental conditions.

Proper humidity is critical for healthy shedding. Low humidity can cause dysecdysis (stuck shed), leading to retained eye caps, constricted toes, or tail tip necrosis. During shedding, many species benefit from a 10-20% humidity increase. A humid hide with damp sphagnum moss is highly recommended for species like leopard geckos. Always monitor humidity with a reliable digital hygrometer.

A typical shed cycle lasts 7-14 days from pre-shed to completion. Snakes generally take 7-10 days (blue phase ~3-5 days, clearing ~2-3 days, active shedding ~30-60 minutes). Leopard geckos often complete shedding within 24-48 hours and frequently eat their shed. Bearded dragons may take 3-7 days with patchy shedding patterns. Juveniles shed more frequently due to rapid growth.

For mild stuck shed: provide a lukewarm soak (85-90°F) for 10-15 minutes, then gently assist with a damp cotton swab. Never forcefully pull dry shed—this can damage new scales. For retained eye caps in snakes, consult a reptile veterinarian. Prevent future issues by maintaining proper humidity levels, providing rough surfaces for rubbing, and ensuring a balanced diet with adequate hydration.

Shedding frequency depends on age, species, and growth rate. Hatchling/juvenile snakes may shed every 2-4 weeks, while adults shed every 4-8 weeks. Juvenile leopard geckos shed every 2-3 weeks, adults every 3-5 weeks. Bearded dragons under 6 months shed every 2-4 weeks, adults every 4-8 weeks. Always research your specific species' requirements and use a digital hygrometer for accurate readings.

It's best to minimize handling during the blue phase and active shedding stages. Reptiles are often more stressed, have reduced visibility (cloudy eyes), and may be more defensive. The new skin underneath is delicate and sensitive. Resume normal handling 24-48 hours after the shed is complete to allow the new skin to fully harden.
