Frequently Asked Questions

In the wild, reptiles rely on confined spaces to escape predators and regulate stress. A snug hide mimics natural crevices, making them feel physically protected. If the hide is too large, they lose that contact and may become anxious, refuse to eat, or display defensive behavior.

Use a soft seamstress tape and wrap it around the thickest part of your reptile’s body (usually mid-body). For snakes, measure the widest point after a meal. The tape should be snug but not tight. If you only have a ruler, wrap a piece of string around the body, mark the overlap, and measure the string length.

It’s designed for commonly kept snakes and lizards (ball pythons, corn snakes, leopard geckos, bearded dragons, etc.). Arboreal species or very small geckos may prefer different styles, but the principle of a tight fit still applies. Always observe your animal’s behavior and adjust if needed.

During a shed cycle, humidity needs may increase, but the hide size does not need to change. A damp moss box of the same tight size can be used as a humid hide. Just ensure the entrance allows your reptile to come and go with ease.

DIY options work great — use food-grade plastic containers, ceramic pots, or cork bark. Cut an entrance hole and sand the edges smooth. Many keepers create custom hides using non-toxic materials. The internal dimensions matter most, regardless of appearance.

For most nervous species, a hide with a single small entrance feels safer. Two openings can create a draft and reduce the feeling of enclosure. If you offer multiple hides, some keepers provide both styles to let the animal choose.
