The Elo system assigns each option an initial rating of 1000 points. When you compare two options and pick a winner, the winner gains points and the loser loses points. You don't necessarily need to complete every pair—the Elo system yields a meaningful ranking even with partial data. However, comparing every pair at least once gives you the most reliable results. After all unique pairs are done, you can continue refining by re‑comparing closely‑rated options.

Selecting "Tie / Skip" treats the comparison as a draw. In Elo terms, both options receive a score of 0.5 for that match. If the two options have different ratings, the higher‑rated one will lose a small number of points while the lower‑rated one gains a small number—reflecting the idea that a tie against a weaker opponent is a slight underperformance. Use this when you genuinely cannot decide between two options.

Pairwise comparison shines when you have many options and find it difficult to mentally sort them all at once. Humans are much better at comparing two items than at ranking a long list. Use this tool for: prioritizing product features, evaluating job candidates, deciding on a vacation destination, ranking personal goals, comparing vendors, or any scenario where you need a clear, defensible ranking from subjective preferences.
