For areas with high mosquito density or smaller biting insects like no-see-ums, increase overlap to 8 inches (20 cm). Our calculator defaults to 6 inches, which provides a solid safety margin for most scenarios.

Most mosquito netting fabric comes in widths of 54 inches (137 cm) or 60 inches (152 cm). Extra-wide options at 108 inches (274 cm) are also available for larger installations. Our calculator defaults to 54 inches — a common and widely available width. If you're sourcing custom netting, simply adjust the "Curtain Width" field to match your material.

For indoor beds, the ceiling often serves as a natural top barrier — so a top cover may be optional if your net reaches all the way to the ceiling with no gaps. However, for outdoor setups (gazebos, patios, camping), a top cover is essential. Mosquitoes naturally fly upward when seeking entry points, and an open top is a direct invitation. We strongly recommend including the top cover for any outdoor application to achieve true 360° protection.

When measuring Drop Height, measure from the suspension point (ceiling hook, canopy frame, or rod) all the way to the floor — and add 2–4 extra inches for tucking. For beds, the net should be long enough to tuck under the mattress on all sides. For gazebos, consider adding small weights or clips at the bottom hem to prevent wind from lifting the net and creating gaps. A well-sealed bottom edge is just as important as the side overlaps.

If your bed is flush against a wall with no gaps, you can skip the net panel on that side. Simply subtract that side's length from the total perimeter calculation. However, ensure the wall itself is sealed — check for cracks, vents, or baseboard gaps where mosquitoes could enter. For the most reliable protection, we still recommend draping a panel on the wall side and tucking it securely. Our calculator assumes free-standing coverage; for wall-against setups, manually adjust by omitting one or two sides from your total panel count.

Look for polyester or polyethylene netting with a mesh count of at least 156 holes per square inch (25 holes/cm²). This blocks mosquitoes while maintaining good airflow and visibility. For areas with tiny biting midges (no-see-ums), opt for a finer 260+ holes/sq inch mesh. Cotton nets are soft and drapable but heavier and prone to mildew in humid conditions. Polyester is lightweight, durable, quick-drying, and ideal for both indoor and outdoor use. Many pre-made curtain panels use 100% polyester with reinforced edges.
