Absolutely. All your event data is stored locally in your browser using localStorage. No data is ever sent to any server or third party. Your family events remain private on your device. If you clear your browser data or use a different browser, you'll need to re-add your events.

Annual events (like birthdays, Christmas, anniversaries) repeat every year. The countdown automatically rolls over to the next year once the date passes. One-time events (like a planned vacation, wedding date, or concert) count down to a specific date. Once passed, they appear faded and show how many days ago they occurred — you can clear them anytime.

Yes! Each category comes with a default emoji, but you can add a custom emoji (or short text) when creating your event. This appears prominently on the countdown card, making it easy to spot events at a glance. You can use any emoji like 🎂, 🎄, ✈️, 🎁, 🏖️, or even short text like "Mom".

The countdown updates every second using your device's local time. It calculates the exact difference between now and midnight of the target date in your local timezone. For annual events, the tool intelligently determines whether to use the current year or the next year based on whether the date has already passed.

When an event's countdown reaches zero (it's the day of the event), the card gets a special golden highlight with a gentle pulsing animation and displays "Today! 🎉". For annual events, the countdown resets to the next year after midnight. For one-time events, the card fades and shows days elapsed.
