Filter Backflush Timer

Keep your Sawyer, Platypus, or other hollow-fiber filters flowing fast. Simply start the timer when you begin backflushing.

How to Backflush

Attach a clean syringe or coupling to the outlet (clean side) of your filter. Gently force clean water backward through the filter pores. Maintain steady pressure for the set duration. Repeat if needed to restore full flow rate.

Frequently Asked Questions

Hollow‑fiber filters like Sawyer and Platypus trap microscopic particles. Over time these clog the fibers, reducing flow. Regular backflushing forces clean water backward to dislodge trapped debris and restores performance.

Sawyer recommends 20–30 seconds of steady backflushing with a syringe. Platypus suggests 30–60 seconds for their gravity filters. Use our timer presets (30s is a great start) and repeat 2–3 times if the flow remains slow.

It depends on water quality. In clear streams, you might only need to backflush every few days of heavy use. In silty or murky water, backflush after every few liters. A good rule: backflush as soon as you notice a meaningful drop in flow rate.

Absolutely! Any hollow‑fiber filter that supports backflushing (e.g., Katadyn BeFree with a syringe adapter, Hydrablu) benefits from timed backflushing. Adjust the duration according to the manufacturer’s recommendation.

Try longer backflush cycles (45–60s) and repeat several times. Use warm (not hot) clean water for better debris removal. If the filter is permanently clogged or damaged, it may need replacement. Always follow the manufacturer's care instructions.
