Oily skin benefits from highly absorbent clays like Bentonite or French Green Clay that draw out impurities. Dry skin does better with gentle Kaolin or Rose Clay. Sensitive skin should stick to White Kaolin or Pink Clay, which are the mildest options. Always patch-test before applying to your entire face.

Raw honey is a natural humectant, meaning it draws moisture into the skin. It also has antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties, helps soothe irritation, and gives the mask a smooth, spreadable consistency. Manuka honey is especially prized for its potent benefits, though any raw, unpasteurized honey works well.

Essential oils are highly concentrated. For facial application, 2–5 drops total per mask batch is the safe range. Our calculator recommends amounts based on your skin type and batch size. Always dilute essential oils in a carrier oil (like jojoba or sweet almond) before adding to your mask. If you have sensitive skin, start with just 1–2 drops or skip essential oils entirely.

Oily skin: 2–3 times per week. Combination skin: 1–2 times per week (focus on the T-zone). Dry skin: once a week or every other week. Sensitive skin: every 10–14 days. Over-masking can strip your skin's natural barrier, so listen to your skin and adjust accordingly.

We recommend mixing fresh each time. Clay masks containing honey and water-based ingredients can spoil or grow bacteria if stored. Dry clay powder can be pre-measured, but add honey, oil, and any liquid only right before application. If you must store a mixed mask, refrigerate it in an airtight container and use within 24 hours.

Good vegan alternatives include aloe vera gel, vegetable glycerin (use sparingly—about half the honey amount), maple syrup, or agave nectar. Aloe vera gel is the top choice for its soothing, hydrating, and non-sticky qualities. Adjust liquid levels as these substitutes have different consistencies than honey.

Carrier oils (jojoba, sweet almond, rosehip, argan) are mild and can be used in larger amounts—they nourish and moisturize the skin directly. Essential oils (tea tree, lavender, rosemary) are potent concentrates used in tiny amounts for their therapeutic properties.
