Frequently Asked Questions

A standard bowling game has 10 frames. In each frame, you get up to 2 attempts (rolls) to knock down all 10 pins. Your score is the total pins knocked down plus bonus points for strikes and spares. A strike (all 10 pins on the first roll) earns a bonus equal to your next 2 rolls. A spare (all 10 pins across both rolls) earns a bonus equal to your next 1 roll. The 10th frame allows up to 3 rolls if you get a strike or spare.
A perfect game is a score of 300, achieved by rolling 12 consecutive strikes — one strike in each of the first 9 frames and 3 strikes in the 10th frame. The math: each of the first 9 strike frames gets 30 points (10 + next 2 rolls, each being 10), totaling 270, plus the 10th frame's 3 strikes add 30, giving 300. It's the holy grail of bowling!
The 10th frame is special. If you get a strike on your first roll, the pins reset and you get 2 more rolls (3 total). If you get a spare (knock down all 10 pins across the first 2 rolls), you get 1 bonus roll (3 total). If you don't get a strike or spare (open frame), you only get 2 rolls total — no bonus. All rolls in the 10th frame are simply added together with no further bonus multipliers.
A strike (marked "X") occurs when you knock down all 10 pins with your first roll of a frame. The bonus is the value of your next 2 rolls. A spare (marked "/") occurs when you knock down all 10 pins using both rolls of a frame. The bonus is the value of your next 1 roll. Strikes are more valuable because they earn a larger bonus. Three consecutive strikes = 30 points in the first frame (often called a "turkey").
A gutter ball occurs when the ball falls into the gutter on either side of the lane without hitting any pins. It is scored as 0 pins for that roll. In traditional scorekeeping, it's often marked with a dash ("–") or "G". In our tracker, simply enter 0 for that roll. Gutter balls are part of the game — even pros throw them occasionally!
This tracker is mobile-friendly and works great at the alley. Simply open it on your phone, and after each roll, tap the highlighted input box and enter the number of pins you knocked down (0–10). Press Enter or Tab to jump to the next ball automatically. The scoreboard calculates everything in real time — strikes, spares, bonuses, and running totals. You can also use the Undo button if you make a mistake.
Turkey: Three consecutive strikes.
Double: Two consecutive strikes.
Open Frame: A frame without a strike or spare.
Split: A spare combination where the headpin is knocked down but a gap remains between standing pins (not directly scored differently, but a notable situation).
Clean Game: A game with no open frames (all strikes or spares).
Handicap: Extra pins added to a player's score to level competition across different skill levels (not tracked here, but common in league play).
If you get a strike or spare, the frame's score can't be fully calculated until subsequent rolls are completed. For a strike, we need the next 2 rolls; for a spare, the next 1 roll. The cumulative score cell will show a dash ("–") until the required bonus rolls are entered. This is completely normal and matches how professional scorekeeping works. Once the needed rolls are filled in, the score updates automatically.
