Sample rate is the number of audio samples captured per second, measured in Hertz (Hz). It determines the highest frequency an audio file can reproduce — the Nyquist theorem states that the maximum frequency is half the sample rate. For example, 44100 Hz (CD quality) can reproduce frequencies up to 22050 Hz, covering the full human hearing range (20 Hz – 20 kHz). Higher sample rates like 96000 Hz preserve ultrasonic frequencies beyond human hearing, useful for professional mastering and sound design.

Common scenarios include: downsampling 96000 Hz studio masters to 44100 Hz for CD or streaming distribution; upsampling 44100 Hz to 48000 Hz for video production (DVD/Blu-ray standard); reducing 44100 Hz to 16000 Hz for voice recordings or telephony applications to save storage; or converting to 8000 Hz for legacy telephone systems. Always consider your target platform's requirements before choosing a sample rate.

Downsampling (e.g., 96000 → 44100 Hz) permanently removes high-frequency content above the new Nyquist limit, which can slightly affect perceived clarity if the original had significant ultrasonic energy. Upsampling (e.g., 44100 → 96000 Hz) does not add new information — the audio quality remains identical to the source. 44100 Hz is the standard for audio CDs, MP3s, and most music streaming platforms (Spotify, Apple Music). The audible difference is negligible for most listeners — choose based on your output medium: music → 44100 Hz, video → 48000 Hz.

Using 16000 Hz captures frequencies up to 8000 Hz, more than enough for intelligible speech while dramatically reducing file size.
