Frequently Asked Questions
What is a City Map Generator used for?
A city map generator creates randomized urban layouts with districts, roads, and landmarks. It's widely used for tabletop RPG campaigns (D&D, Pathfinder), worldbuilding projects, creative writing, game prototyping, and urban planning education. The generated grid-based maps help visualize city structures instantly without manual drawing.
How do the district types affect the generated map?
Each district type has a distinct color and building pattern. Residential areas show dense small housing; Commercial districts feature larger business blocks; Industrial zones display warehouse-like structures; Parks have tree clusters and open spaces; Civic districts contain administrative buildings and plazas; and Water zones represent rivers, lakes, or canals with wave patterns.
Can I regenerate the same map later using a seed?
Yes! The Seed field stores the random generation parameters. Enter the same seed number, grid dimensions, and settings to reproduce an identical map. This is essential for consistent worldbuilding—share the seed with your gaming group to ensure everyone sees the same city layout.
How do landmarks work in this tool?
Landmarks are special points of interest placed randomly across non-water districts. They include Town Halls (civic centers with flag icons), Temples (religious structures), Towers (defensive or observation), Market Squares, Libraries, and Fountains. Each landmark is drawn as a unique miniature icon on the map, making key locations easy to identify at a glance.
Can I export the city map as an image?
Absolutely. Click the Download button (📥) to export the current map as a high-resolution PNG file. The export includes all visible elements—districts, roads, landmarks, labels, and the compass rose. You can then print it, embed it in documents, or use it in virtual tabletop software like Roll20 or Foundry VTT.
What does the River option do?
When enabled, the river carves a winding waterway across the city from one map edge to another. River cells are colored as water districts, and the path is randomized but guided by the seed for reproducibility. Rivers add geographic realism and natural barriers that can define city quarters—perfect for medieval or port city settings.
Is this tool mobile-friendly?
Yes, the City Map Generator is fully responsive. On smaller screens, controls stack vertically for easy touch access, and the canvas scales to fit your device width. You can generate, customize, and export maps seamlessly on phones and tablets.
What do the road widths represent?
Thicker grid lines represent main roads or boulevards that form the primary transportation network. Thinner lines are secondary streets and alleys. The tool automatically designates every 3rd horizontal and vertical line as a main road, creating a natural hierarchy that mimics real urban planning patterns.
