Maintenance dose (0.2–0.5 ppm): Applied weekly or bi-weekly to prevent algae growth before it starts. Uses less product and is gentler on fish. Treatment dose (0.6–2.0 ppm): Applied when algae is already visible. Higher concentrations kill existing algae but require careful monitoring of oxygen levels and fish health.

When a large amount of algae dies suddenly, decomposition consumes massive amounts of dissolved oxygen (a process called biological oxygen demand). This can cause fish suffocation within hours. By splitting the treatment into 2–3 smaller doses applied 3–5 days apart, you allow the pond ecosystem to gradually process the dead algae while maintaining safe oxygen levels.

Hydrogen peroxide-based algaecides (27–35%) are generally the safest for fish ponds since they break down into water and oxygen. Chelated copper products are safer than copper sulfate because they remain active longer at lower toxicity levels. Quaternary ammonium compounds are effective but more toxic to fish — use only in fish-free ornamental ponds. Always check the product label for fish safety and calculate dosage precisely.

Apply algaecide early in the morning on a sunny day. At this time, dissolved oxygen is at its lowest (since plants haven't started photosynthesizing yet), and the treatment will have maximum daylight hours to work. The algae are also beginning their daily photosynthetic cycle, making them more susceptible. Avoid applying on cloudy days or before rain, which can dilute the treatment.

Overdosing can cause: fish gill damage and rapid death (especially with copper products), mass die-off of beneficial bacteria disrupting the nitrogen cycle, and sudden oxygen crashes. If you suspect an overdose: immediately perform a 25–50% water change, add activated carbon to filtration, increase aeration aggressively, and monitor fish for signs of distress (gasping at surface, lethargy, reddened gills). Always double-check calculations before dosing.

For maintenance, apply a low dose (0.2–0.3 ppm) every 7–14 days during the growing season (spring through early fall). Reduce frequency in cooler months when algae growth slows. Always test water parameters regularly — if pH, ammonia, or nitrite levels are abnormal, address those issues before adding algaecide, as stressed fish are more vulnerable to chemical treatments.
