Measure the width and height of the opening — not the glass, but the area where tracks will be mounted. For most installations, measure from the outer edges of the window frame or the masonry opening. Always take 3 measurements (top, middle, bottom for width; left, center, right for height) and use the smallest dimension. Add 2–3 inches of overlap per side for track-mounted shutters.

Storm Panels: Removable corrugated metal or polycarbonate panels that slide into pre-installed tracks. Most affordable ($7–$15/sq ft). Require storage and manual installation before storms.
Roll-Down Shutters: Permanently mounted above windows, roll down manually or via motor. Most convenient but priciest ($20–$40/sq ft).
Accordion Shutters: Side-mounted folding panels that unfold to cover windows. Mid-range cost ($15–$30/sq ft). Quick deployment but more visible when open.
All three must meet Miami-Dade County or FBC impact standards for Florida and coastal regions.

Standard overlap is 2 inches per side (4 inches total added to window width). For High-Velocity Hurricane Zones (HVHZ) like Miami-Dade and Broward counties, use 3 inches per side (6 inches total). Track length = window width + overlap on both sides. Always verify local building codes — some jurisdictions require specific overlap based on wind load calculations per ASCE 7 standards.

At the start of hurricane season (June 1): Inspect all tracks, lubricate moving parts, test-deploy shutters, and check fasteners. Don't wait for a storm warning — hardware stores sell out quickly. 48–72 hours before landfall: Deploy all shutters, double-check fasteners, and secure loose outdoor items. Early preparation prevents last-minute scrambling and ensures your shutters function correctly when it matters most.

DIY is feasible for storm panels if you're comfortable drilling into concrete/stucco and can ensure proper anchoring. Professional installation is recommended for roll-down and accordion shutters due to weight, spring tension, and alignment complexity. Many insurance companies require professional installation certification for premium discounts. Always pull permits — unpermitted shutters can cause issues during home sales or insurance claims.

Use 1/4" stainless steel Tapcon screws for concrete/masonry walls (minimum 1-1/4" embedment) or stainless lag bolts with appropriate anchors for wood framing. Fasteners should be spaced every 12–18 inches along each track. For coastal areas, use 316 marine-grade stainless steel to resist salt corrosion. Always pre-drill pilot holes and apply marine-grade sealant around each fastener to prevent water intrusion.
