Frequently Asked Questions

This tool helps you organize and track storage bins across your shelves or storage units. You create Shelves (or racks, cabinets, wall units) and then add Bins to each shelf. Each bin can have a label, category, and description, making it easy to find exactly what you're looking for—even months later. All data is saved locally in your browser.

Your inventory data is stored using localStorage in your browser. It persists across browser sessions—closing your browser or restarting your computer won't erase it. However, clearing your browser cache or using private/incognito mode may remove the data. We recommend using the Export feature periodically to back up your inventory as a JSON file.

Click the Export button to download your entire inventory as a JSON file. To restore or transfer your data, click Import and select a previously exported JSON file. This is perfect for backing up your data or moving it to another device.

We provide common categories like Tools, Automotive, Garden, Seasonal/Holiday, Electronics, Sports, Camping, Paint & Supplies, Hardware, and Cleaning. Using consistent categories helps you filter and locate items faster. You can also use the Description field to add specific details like quantities or expiration dates.

Absolutely! This tool is fully responsive and works great on mobile devices. You can pull it up on your phone while standing in front of your shelves to quickly check where something is or update your inventory in real time.

A Shelf represents a physical storage unit—like a wall shelf, a metal rack, a cabinet, or even a designated floor area. A Bin is a container that sits on that shelf, such as a plastic tote, a cardboard box, or a tool case. This hierarchical structure mirrors how most garages and storage rooms are actually organized.

Use the search bar at the top to search by bin label, category, or description. You can also click on the category filter buttons to show only bins of a certain type. When a bin matches your search, its parent shelf will be highlighted so you know exactly where to look.
