Frequently Asked Questions
What is a favicon and why do I need multiple sizes?
A favicon (favorite icon) is the small icon displayed in browser tabs, bookmarks, and history. Different platforms require different sizes — 16×16 for legacy browsers, 32×32 for modern tabs, 180×180 for Apple devices, and up to 512×512 for Android PWA install screens. Providing all sizes ensures your brand looks crisp everywhere.
ICO vs PNG — which format should I use?
The .ico format can contain multiple sizes in a single file (16×16, 32×32, 48×48, 256×256). It's the most compatible option — every browser supports it. Modern browsers also accept PNG favicons (linked with rel="icon"). We recommend using both: an .ico file for maximum compatibility and individual PNGs for specific platform requirements (Apple, Android).
What is an Apple Touch Icon?
An Apple Touch Icon is used when iOS users add your website to their home screen. Apple recommends a 180×180 PNG with a solid background (no transparency). Older iOS versions use 152×152, 120×120, or smaller sizes. Our generator creates all common Apple touch icon sizes automatically.
Where should I place these icon files on my server?
Place favicon.ico in your website's root directory (e.g., /favicon.ico) for automatic discovery. Apple Touch Icons and PWA icons can also go in the root, then reference them in your HTML <head> using the snippet we provide above. The site.webmanifest file should also be in the root directory.
What is site.webmanifest and do I need it?
site.webmanifest is a JSON file that tells Android/Chrome which icons to use when a user installs your site as a PWA (Progressive Web App). It requires at minimum 192×192 and 512×512 PNG icons. Our generator creates both and provides a ready-to-use manifest snippet.
Why does my favicon look blurry or pixelated?
Small icons (16×16, 32×32) have limited pixels. For best results, start with a high-resolution square image (≥260×260) with a simple, bold design. Avoid fine details and text — they become illegible at small sizes. Our canvas-based resizer uses high-quality smoothing, but the source image quality is the most important factor.
Can I use an SVG as my favicon?
Modern browsers (Chrome 80+, Firefox 41+, Edge 80+) support SVG favicons, which look sharp at any size. However, Safari and some mobile browsers do not. For maximum compatibility, we recommend uploading an SVG to this tool, generating PNG/ICO versions, and using the HTML snippet that provides fallbacks for all browsers.
