Frequently Asked Questions

This generator uses a BSP (Binary Space Partitioning) algorithm to recursively subdivide the map area, place rooms within each subdivision, and connect them with corridors. The result is a coherent dungeon layout suitable for tabletop RPGs like Dungeons & Dragons, Pathfinder, or OSR games. Each room is randomly sized and positioned, and corridors are routed using L-shaped paths between connected rooms.

Green circle marks the dungeon entrance (typically the room closest to the top edge). Gold square indicates a treasure room or boss lair (usually the most isolated room). Small dark squares inside larger rooms represent pillars or structural columns. Grid lines (when enabled) represent 5-foot squares, the standard D&D movement unit.

Yes! Click the "Download as PNG" button to save the current map as a high-resolution PNG image (820×560 pixels). You can then print it, import it into a VTT (Virtual Tabletop) like Roll20 or Foundry, or share it with your players. The download uses the full internal resolution for crisp quality.

The seed is a numeric value that initializes the random number generator. Using the same seed always produces the exact same map. This is incredibly useful for DMs: you can share a seed with co-DMs, regenerate a map you liked later, or note down the seed in your campaign notes to recreate a specific dungeon layout on demand. Click the copy icon to save the current seed.

You can set a target between 4 and 22 rooms using the slider. The actual number may vary slightly (usually ±2) because the algorithm must fit rooms within the available space while respecting minimum size constraints. The "Complexity" setting also affects room density: Low produces fewer, larger rooms with simpler connections; High packs in more rooms with twistier corridors.

Absolutely. All maps generated by this tool are 100% royalty-free for personal and commercial use. You can use them in published adventures, VTT modules, streamed games, or any other project without attribution (though a shout-out is always appreciated!). The generator itself runs entirely in your browser — no data is ever uploaded to any server.

1. Key your rooms: After generating, mentally number the rooms and jot down what each contains (monsters, treasure, traps).
2. Add secret passages: The generator creates the base layout — you can always add hidden doors between adjacent rooms.
3. Use the grid: With the 5-ft grid enabled, each square is one combat tile, making tactical movement easy.
4. Scale up: Print the map large or import it into a VTT with dynamic lighting for immersive sessions.
5. Combine maps: Generate multiple floors and connect them with staircases for a multi-level dungeon crawl.
